Cappadocia Ortahisar

Ortahisar, a rock fortress on the heights

Along the Ürgüp-Nevşehir highway, about six kilometers before Ürgüp you will find the turnoff for Ortahisar. The fortress on the mass of natural rock, used by the early Christians who settled here as a shelter and a refuge, is the most majestic location in the settlement and one of the highest points in the region.

Behind the Ortahisar Fortress in the deserted old neighborhoods are the storage rooms that have been in use since Byzantine times. Every year tons of lemons, oranges and other citrus fruits are brought here from the Mediterranean region, chiefly Mersin, for storage in the natural underground depots in Ortahisar before being exported to Europe.

In the vicinity of Ortahisar are the Üzümlü, Sarıca and Cambazlı churches. The valley below the town extends as far as İbrahimpaşa Village, and boasts one of the most Beautiful walking courses in all of Cappadocia.
